Tips

To ensure a stretchy top edge, after knitting the first two stitches of every row, add a yarn over before the M1L. Drop this yarnover and pick up from the back of the stitch for the M1R and the end of each row.

Use a locking stitch marker for each Row 1 in the garter body. This easily allows you to keep track without counting rows. I just clipped it to the m1 after the center marker every time I made the center increase stitches.

Weights

Started with 248g yarn
Garter body: 94g
Chart 1: 39g (115g remaining)
Chart 2: 38g (77g remaining)
Chart 3: 15g (63g remaining)
Addition to chart 3 to make it a full chart repeat: 17g (46g remaining)
Chart 4 (6 rows): 20g (26g remaining)
2 purl rows one garter ridge: 6g (20g remaining)
Picot bind off: 15.5g (4.5g remaining)

Weight notes

Started the lace border 11/6. Had 30g of the first ball left when I began the transition ridge, and started alternating balls there. These skeins are little heavier than the label indicates (120g each instead of 114g) but I don’t think I have enough yarn to do the medium size, so I forged ahead. If I’ve a lot of yarn left at the end, I’ll do a few extra garter ridges before the picot bind off.

Have about 16g of the first ball left after row 8 of chart 1. I’ve been alternating skeins, and used about 15g of that ball. This means that I would have run out of the first ball here if I hadn’t been alternating. Probably could have done the medium size. Oh well!

Ran out of ball 1 at the end of row 4 of Chart 2. Got 8 rows total out of it, which is what I thought I’d get. Have 3g left over.

Decided to add another chart repeat. Will do only one or two garter ridges at end before picots. Odd shaped shawl calculator says I should have enough yarn for 130 rows before the picot (saving 6 rows for bind off).

Picot bindoff took a little over 5 rows worth of yarn (each row took approximately 3g of yarn at the end).

Ended with 4 grams remaining! Could have snuck in two garter ridges after all if I had knit them instead of purled them but it’s ok. That would have been some serious yarn chicken. My heart was racing most of the way through the bind off as it was!

Odds and ends

I started this on the plane ride back from Denmark. I am so excited to be making another Dee shawl.

The shawl pattern is named Beckley, who was the first librarian of Congress.

Color is very hard to photograph. The first photo is the truest to color.
