Another pair of bespoke mitts for my sister for her Christmas gifting this December (2020).
These are proving to be a pain in the neck because (1) I am making them in a larger size for my nephew so I have to fiddle, (2) I had a heck of a time finding the colours I wanted - came close (3) and lastly, I didn’t think the yarn I chose was heavy enough, so I wasted a lot of time playing with various gauges/needle sizes. Couldn’t find a heavier yarn. It’s an impossible task anyway (I know this!) as you can’t substitute the weight of the yarn unless you want huge mittens. I’ll reassess after I’ve done. I may knit a liner if I still think they are too thin. On the positive side, the one partially finished mitt fit my brother, who is my hand model for this project.
October 12, 2020 - I got 3/4 all the way to the decrease at the top when I started having trouble. Duh! I didn’t cast on enough stitches at the thumb slit. 2 stitches short, so the pattern was off. That’s what I get for trying to read the pattern and the captions for “Hamilton” on Netflix at the same time. Frogged. Started over.
October 17th. Finished. Not crazy about the cuffs. They are long and there isn’t enough stranding to tighten it up to match the tightness of the hand section. If I were to make these again I would increase the rows of ribbing and take out of first 5 rows of the cuff chart. Or simply fold the cuff at the first solid line of the cuff chart (row 6) and sew it to the inside of the mitt. This would make for a more solid cuff. I may still do that.
