Notes

I was looking for a shawl that was a simple, pretty, and not too decorative or dressy. Then I thought
“this is it!”

It is such a clean and elegant shawl that I would love to knit and wear. I also wanted to use Quince & Co’s yarn, in Leek color, so this was perfect!

My recommendation: prepare the yarn for 1000 yards at least, and knit with US 4 needles (or even US 3 if you knit loose). It is quite hard to achieve the correct gauge with US 5 needles and fingering weight yarn, in my opinion. It is very likely that you will use more yarn than the pattern suggested. Of course, you can adjust the size by reducing the times of repeating lace pattern (eight rows for one set).

I love this yarn; it’s so nice and smooth. I tried have the correct gauge (I know this is not a sweater, but still…) with US 5 needle, but I couldn’t achieve it; I was not knitting small enough. Since the pattern mentioned that the gauge size is for after blocking, I submerged it in water and dry it to see shrinkage. There weren’t any (or not significant). So, I am going to use US 4 needle with 32” circular cord. If it ended up a bit smaller, it can be blocked and fixed, I suppose.

6.17.14 -
This is actually my first time to knit something flat. I read the technique, “slip the first stitch of every row purlwise”. Those edges look so neat on YouTube. I love this yarn and want to love this shawl too. I decided to frog and re-knitting.

7.7.14 -
I used 1 skein, and there are 98 stitches so far.

8.9.14 -
I finished the second skein.

8.19.14 -
I finished the third skein.

8.25.14 -
I finished the fourth skein right before starting the lace border.

8.29.14 -
Now I need to do the final binding. I have never done Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretch Bind-Off (JSSBO) or Elizabeth Zimmermann’s sewn-bind off. I probably use JSSBO because I don’t need to snip the yarn till finish binding off.

Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretch Bind-Off (JSSBO)

8.30.14 -
After JSSBO, there was 33 grams left from the fifth skein. I finish weaving in loose ends. I am quite satisfying how it came out. The measurement may be a bit larger than the pattern suggested, but the variance is not more than one inch. I haven’t blocked it yet, but I know this yarn won’t shrink much (or at all).

My finished measurement is 68” (wingspan) x 31” (center spine).
