For the decreases, I used SSK on the second row of each decrease to make it look more balanced.

I went to a size 7 needle to make it a bit smaller.

I think the hat needs to be taller to allow for cuffing. I made 8 rows of the bottom. In the future, I’ll make it 1x1 ribbing on size 6 needles to make it tighter. I went 44 rows before starting the decreases and it makes for a nicer size hat in my opinion.
