Mid surgery: I unraveled the original sleeves the round before the join, and re-knit them as conjoined twins following the basted line of where the caps would like to be.

In the fitting session on Annie I cut the original sleeves a safe margin from the body, tucked them under the body, then used scrap yarn to baste an approximation of where the new sleeve cap should be.

Notes

I purchased the yarn for this sweater in person during our trip to Shetland, so it is extra special!
(All except for the discontinued color 55, which two kind Ravelers sent me so I would be able to use all the original colors.)

Inspired by RedGrouse’s lovely version, I’m knitting this as a pullover, copying the size and shaping from one of Annie’s favorite sweaters.

I LOVE the way this looks--such a classic pattern--but… it’s a pretty boring knit :(

As seems standard for me with this kind of project, I swatched and did lots of math but ended up kind of winging the very top section. My shoulder patterns weren’t going to match nicely, so I added a little shoulder shaping in the cream to disguise that. And the sleeve caps math didn’t match my knitting, so I fudged that too. Still, I’m quite pleased with how this came out!

Now to knit two smaller versions for my nieces!

I brought the sweater home after my May visit, because the sleeves/shoulders were too wonky to wear. I’ve cut out the sleeves and will re knit the sleeve caps of both sleeves with steeks in between. I’ll sew the new sleeves in but not weave in the ends or tack anything down so that Annie can try it on in August when I see her next to make sure it works…
