Notes

I’m delighted to be doing another test for the Queen of tailored, classic knitwear - Jutta von Hinterm Stein. It’s always a huge privilege to test Jutta’s beautiful, innovative designs. Her patterns are always thoroughly tested and easy to understand.

For this test project, I used “Version 2” of Jutta’s test pattern. Since then, she has made some changes to the pattern - namely to decrease the armhole depth and increase the number of sleeve stitches. So the final pattern will probably fit women a little better than the earlier version of the test pattern.

I LOVE this yarn which has a chain construction and gorgeous, heathered colors! Just discovered it during 2022 and plan to use it a lot - especially for gifting because I know the recipients will be doing machine washing and drying. It comes out of a warm dryer wrinkle free and looking gorgeous. You must allow for some shrinkage during the first laundering, however.

Needles used:

Size 7 US - Body and sleeves

Size 6 US - Neck ribbing

Size 5 US - Bottom ribbing and sleeve ribbing

What I did differently:
Note that most of my changes were to allow for shrinkage of the sweater due to machine washing and drying. Also, I wanted this pullover to fit a young man.

  • Section 5 (Work Raglan Increases): All of Jutta’s patterns have instructions for what to do if you fall in between sizes as was the case here. I followed the instructions for the Large size, but did one extra repeat of Rnds 1 and 2 which increased my stitch counts to:

98 sts - Front and Back
62 sts - Each Sleeve
Prior to separating body and sleeves

  • Section 6 (Separate Body and Sleeves): I cast on 8 sts under each arm = 212 total body stitches.

  • Section 7 (Bottom Band): On the last round before starting the ribbing, I increased 36 sts evenly all around for a total of 248 ribbing stitches. (I do this so that the garment will hang straighter rather than pull in at the bottom.) I then switched to a size 5 US needle for the ribbing. I only made the ribbing 4” high.

  • Section 8 (Sleeves): I had 62 sts on hold for each sleeve. Picked up 12 sts under each arm for a total of 74 sleeve sts to start. On the next round, I decreased 2 sts under the arm = 72 sts. On the next round, I decreased 2 sts on top of the shoulder per pattern = 70 sts. This was the last top-of-shoulder decrease. All remaining decreases were under the arm as follows:

Decrease 2 sts on every 11th round (11 times) = 48 sts

Knit 10 rounds straight

Switch to size 5 US needle and do 2 x 2 ribbing for 26 rounds. Bind off using JSSBO with same size needle. Sleeve ribbing = 4” high. (48 sts around for ribbing)

Weight of finished garment = 22 oz. (623.7 grams)

Finished Measurements (after shrinking in a warm dryer):

Chest circumference - 43.5” (shrank 2”)

Back length - 26.5” (shrank 2”)

Length from underarm to bottom - 16.5” (shrank 1.5”)

Sleeve length from underarm - 21.5” (shrank 2”)

Upper arm circumference - 13.5” (shrank .5”)

Lower arm circumference (above cuff) - 9.5” (shrank .5”)

Armhole depth - 9” (shrank .5”)

Ribbing height - 3.75” (shrank .25”)

kimmyz's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Beautiful, sophisticated colors suitable for any sex
  2. Tweedy look, chain construction, great stitch definition
  3. Machine wash and dry. However, if throwing this into a warm dryer, expect the sweater to shrink 2 - 3 inches in length, but only 1 inch in width.
