Notes

This is my first test for the talented Jennifer Beale.

I highly recommend using a 60-inch (152 cm) long cable for this project - especially when you get to the very long wingspan part. I bought my interchangeable needles and cable from twitchyhands.com. Free shipping on needles.

No pickup ratios are given in the pattern. The following pickup ratios were approximate for my size 2:

Saddle shoulder pickup: 2~3 rows

Sleeve panel pickup: 4~5 rows

For the wingspan, my stitch pickup ratio was 8~9 (8 out of 9 rows). If you have a different number of rows in your wingspan, your ratio may be different. I only added 4 rows to Chart C to get the recommended length for my size. Other pickup ratios I used:

Sleeve cuff ribbing (long edges): 2~3 rows
(Shoulder saddle strip held stitches: 1~1)

Diagonal sections of the neckline ribbing: 2~3 rows
All other sections of the neckline ribbing: 1~1

Needles used:

Size 5 US - Everything except for the neckband ribbing

Size 4 US - Neckband ribbing (first inch)

Size 3 US - Neckband 2-stitch i-cord bindoff

Weight of finished garment: 19.9 oz (564 grams)

If I knit this again, I will go down one needle size and use a finer yarn. The yarn I used was okay, and the fit was okay, but it fits more like a poncho. I can seldom match both stitch and row gauge. I went by stitch gauge, but (for me) row gauge is more important in this pattern. I don’t really care if the sleeves come out shorter, but I would prefer that the sleeves are less deep. The extra depth was due to my longer row gauge. This yarn has good drape, though. Whatever yarn you choose, be sure that it has good drape.

What I did differently:

I changed the lower ribbing so that the body pattern would flow into the lower ribbing. (Pattern has 3 x 3 ribbing for the bottom edge.) A couple other testers did this as well. I accomplished this by doing some purl increases in the round preceeding the lower ribbing. I like the way it turned out.

Video tutorial for 2-stitch I-CORD BIND-OFF in the Round without a JOG. This is used for the neckband bindoff.
