Notes

I was gifted this gorgeous, hand dyed yarn through Freecycle. I’m sure it was expensive - 100% merino most likely, very soft and all my favorite colors. It’s one ply and has a lot of elasticity. The yarn reminds me of Malabrigo Machita, but I don’t think mine is superwash merino. Also, this is not a Malabrigo colorway. Whatever it is, I wish I had more of it. I only have the one ball, and since I don’t know what it is, I don’t really know the yardage. I’m starting with approximately 4.3 oz (122 grams). This would be equivalent to 512 yards in Malabrigo Mechita.

This was an “in between testing”, mindless commute project. I cast on 71 sts as per the pattern instructions. The scarf will look much wider after blocking. This is ribbing, so it’s very accordion-like while knitting. Unblocked, it only measures 6” (15 cm) wide.

With my gauge, each 12-row repeat of the chart = 1.6” (4 cm) in length.

I only had enough yarn to do 23 repeats of the chart (276 rows) + 3” (24 rows) of plain ribbing on each end = 324 rows total. There was only a little bit of yarn left over.

In order to make this scarf the desired length, I would need about 180 grams (6.4 oz) or 762 yards of fingering weight yarn. That would give me a scarf approximately 5’ long.

Note that the eyelet holes in this scarf could be used as buttonholes if you want to create an infinity scarf by joining into a ring with buttons. In order to space the buttons evenly along one edge, you’ll need to either add 5 more sts to your cast on than what the pattern says (or else 5 sts less).

Although this scarf is not reversible, it does look nice on both sides. See photo at left to compare sides. The double decreases + yarnovers almost look like little bobbles when left unblocked.

I really like this simple pattern. Surely will knit another one with more yarn. Next time I make this, I will start with the 3” of plain ribbing as I did here. However, after that, I’ll start with Row 9 instead of Row 1.

I’m pleased with how this turned out, but I think it would be even more outstanding with a solid color or heather yarn. It would allow the stitch pattern to shine even more.

What I did differently:

  • I did the basic end ribbing for 3 inches before starting the chart part of the pattern. I also ended with the same 3” of plain ribbing before binding off in pattern.

  • I did the edges differently as follows:

With yarn in front, slip the first stitch of every row purlwise.
