To ensure the top edge has enough stretch in it I am adding a YO after the first st of every row and then dropping the extra YO when I come to it at the end of the row.

Instead of binding off the main shawl and then knitting the lace border separately to be mattress stitched together I am going to knit the lace as an applied border.
So after the 4 rnds of double spinni I knit a lateral braid (RS) to emulate the DC crochet chain that the pattern instructed.
Now starting on the WS I shall begin the applied border.

The stitches after the lateral braid are quite loose so when I knitted on the border it didn’t sit flush against the braid row and looks like eyelet holes all along the length of the shawl between the main body and the border.
I don’t love it but it’ll do.

The applied border worked really well and avoids having to sew it together.

Applied border mods:
setup
WS: Cable CO 9sts, sl1wyif, k6, p1, k2tog (with first stitch from shawl body)

Row 1 (RS): follow lace border pattern instructions from Row 1 but change first stitch to a sl1wyif
Row 2 - 12: follow pattern instructions but end every WS row with a k2tog (with the next stitch from the shawl body).

Repeat rows 1-12 until all stitches of the shawl body have been worked.

BO all stitches at the end.
