This is the craziest pattern!!! :-)
I got stuck at the beginning where it gave the tip about using a small plastic marker, it just didn’t make any sense to me based on how I was knitting the rows. When I changed the wording… “At the end of each odd numbered row”… I changed odd to “even” and then at the end of the paragraph… “At the start of each even numbered row”… I changed even to “odd” and then it made sense.
Beyond that, I just blindly followed the directions, and lo and behold, it turned into a hat. I don’t have a lot of experience with short rows, except for socks, but I just followed the directions and it worked.
I used size 5 needles b/c that’s what I used to make Amber’s Butterscotch Topping sweater with this same yarn and I was getting the gauge suggested in this pattern (5 SPI), but it sure came out small, it measured 10” across. But when Amber tried it on, it stretched, it fit perfectly, and she loved it. And she has a big head. Whew.
If I made it again, I would go up a needle size. And I would do a provisional cast on and then do a 3 needle bind off or a Kitchener stitch to close.
I liked the pattern, it was a fun knit, but I had mixed feelings about the lack of information it gave regarding what the finished size should be or even how to measure gauge with the way these rows create themselves. I really couldn’t even figure out how/where to measure for gauge on this.
Final weight - 1.9 oz, I calculate that to be about 120 yards of yarn, way less than “required”.
Picture 3 is front of hat.
Pictures 4&5 are different “poses”.
Picture 6 is the top of hat, showing the short rows and the back seam (which is actually in front in this pic).
Picture 7 is the back seam.
I sure wish Ravelry would let you put captions on individual pictures! :-)
