Begin colorwork chart from Valenzi; incorporate decreases into patterning.

Change from shaping of Elfin Peak to shaping on every row, accommodating the colorwork pattern being used. This gives it more of a traditional stocking cap shape because shaping isn’t distributed evenly around circumference as in Elfin Peak pattern.

First 30 rows of chart were worked even, about 6”, before beginning decreases. An inch or so less might have worked better, but by the time I decided this, there was no way I was going to tink again--it took a good bit of tinking to figure out how to do the decreases. I placed a marker at beginning of round and halfway point--72 sts Decreases were worked two every round, alternating whether decrease was done, SSK, after each marker or K2tog before each marker. This created a narrow line of decreases on each side--se photo--and a very regular, angular-shaped hat rather than the gentle shaping of Elfin Peak. I hope blocking will help with the blobbiness, once I fIgure out how to do the blocking… See photo. Colorwork from Shetland yarn can be blocked very aggressively.3 Shetland sweaters, hats, socks, gloves are finished traditionally and todat by shaping on wooden frames/shaped boards with ribbing gathered in cotton thread to prevent stretching when rest of garment is stretched.

Calculation to see how Valenzi colorwork charts will fit on hat:
Elfin Peak Row gauge is 33 rnd/4” and chart is to be worked 3.5 times. 30 x 3.5 = 105 rnds total
105 rnds x 4”/33 rnd =12.75 “
Add 1” ribbing, so final length of hat will be 13.75”

I stopped at row 100 because I wanted to end with dark brown and use dark brown for the tassel. My unblocked hat measures 14.5”.

My colorwork gauge for this needle/yarn is 36 rnd = 4”
My corrugated ribbing, as worked, measures about 1.75”
13.75” - 1.75” = 12” desired length of colorwork
12” x 36 rnd/4” = 108 rnds colorwork
Valenzi chart is 111 rnds. Voila! I can always work the last several inches with a slightly smaller needle if I decide hat body is becoming too long.

Stopped after last dark brown row as hat was long enough and I had decided to use dark brown tassel. Shaping rows were directed to CF and CB so that hat would have appropriate elfin tilt. Body of hat needed to be tacked in position as tassel is heavy.
