Notes

Little Houndales Knits staff were kind enough to ship this discontinued yarn to me, even though it was reduced and therefore a very small purchase.

Had a couple of false starts. I wanted to put in yarnovers on the pick-up row to reduce the “hump” problem and to create continuity with the yarnovers along the top of the shawl. I was somewhat successful in doing this.

This blog post explains a bit. I found that making the tab longer did not make much difference – the important factor was the yarnovers on the pick-up row. Basically, you need to create more stitches on that row. I had to do double yarnovers, otherwise they disappeared. Not sure why.

Also, I started with 5mm needles, but the fabric was a little loose and I was having trouble wrangling them. Ripped back to start and changed to 4.5mm. Much better.

I do find written lace patterns hard to follow (physically – my eyes lose their place on lines of knitting instructions).

Up to Row 97.

I am to-ing and fro-ing on this yarn. I really don’t like the white-ish nylon strand in it. It makes the yarn look cheap, like synthetic baker’s twine. On the other hand, the colours are pretty and work well with the design.

If I were to make this again, I would knit:

Ridged eyelet, butterflies
x3

Then knotted openwork (extending if desired), and ruffle. I might throw in another ridged eyelet after the knotted openwork too.

I thought about frogging, but the rows are so long that I will continue with what I have. I will need to find more yarn for the ruffle, a coordinating solid.

Took this off the needles and tried it on – it looks good! Lucky for Sue I don’t wear pink!

Ready to cast off. Would like to try co-ordinating solid colour. Will have a chance to visit two LYSs tomorrow. I haven’t done a picot cast-off before.

I ended up using this tutorial by Holli Yeoh. Cheers, Holli!

If I remember rightly, this method anchors the following edge of the picot and produces a more satisfying result than the basic method.

After some of my usual mind changing and fussing about, I settled on casting off with 4ply bright pink cotton. I did one row of reverse stockinette before the cast off. The Noema is not even DK weight, I don’t think. I first tried casting off with DK weight cotton, and the bobbles were a little heavy.

With all the prevaricating, I acquired three colours of DK-weight cotton. I think I will buy a pale neutral and a couple more brights and make a cotton granny blanket for my friends’ daughter. Should be fun to crochet cotton squares over the hot months.

I used light grey cotton sewing thread to secure the ends of the yarn. It blended in well and I feel confident the ends will stay put now.

I cannot remember whether I used 3 or 4 balls of Noema, so to avoid misleading anyone I have removed that information altogether.

Thanks to my dad for taking modelled photos and for Photoshopping my fringe, which refused to sit properly today. Despite his best photographic efforts, I look grumpy, which he could not Photoshop out.

I changed the name to Google Translate Latin because in Australia “summer flies” makes you think of blowflies, not pretty shawls.

Now to find suitable wrapping and post to the recipient before summer really does fly!
