To prep for the clean pick up edge, the decreases have to be at least one stitch in from the edge. I don’t have the magazine handy, so I’m not sure how the editor dealt with decreases. I knit them one stitch in from the edge, but different style guides for different publications dictate whether that’s spelled out, or simply stated dec one stitch each neck edge. If you put the dec on the last two stitches, you have no clean place to pick up.

Note in the picture in the magazine you see one clean line of decreases outside the pick up edge. That’s because the pick up is in the space between the last two columns of stitches, the single stitch on the edge and the decrease.

So … either your decreases were all the way at the edge, or you are not picking up in the space between two columns, but in the the middle of a stitch.
