Notes

This is a combination of two patterns plus myself, so ended up with a number of mods :)

For instance, I used the measurements from this pattern and the eyelet & cable combination from the ‘Wood Sorrel’ Christening Vest (from the book Vintage Knits for Babies - Rita Taylor). The measurements for the Christening vest are given only for 6 & 12 months babies, using 3mm & 3.75 mm needles, but the no. of cast on stitches is similar to this pattern. I liked very much the idea of eyelets next to cables and wanted to make a vest for a child 3-4 yo so I adjusted the size by changing the needle size.

I made three of these vests for charity.
For this one I held the white yarn double. My tension for this blue yarn is the same as the one listed for this project = cca 17 sts / 24 rows / 10 cm

Mods:
Worked in the round:
- Worked in the round up to the armhole shaping, then back and forth, first completing the back (leaving the front on spares)

Different Rib length:
- C/on long tail 120 sts with 4.0 mm, joined to work in the round and ribbed 1x1 for 10 rnds (including the cast on): 4 rnds blue, 2 cream , 4 blue. The bottom rib is cca 4 cm;

Different front pattern:
- Changed to 4.5 mm and worked (considered) first 60 sts for back then next 60 sts for front, in pattern (eyelet is k1, yo, k2tog with 2/2 mirror cables - right cable twists to the right and the left the other way), all for cca 21 cm (i.e. 58 rnds);

Didn’t cast off sts at end of Back Side:
- I split the work for back-armhole shaping and continued working only on the Back side up to 36 cm (from cast on, all together 94 rows). After shaping the armholes I had for Back side 44 sts that I didn’t cast off, but moved them on spare circs. I considered 2x11 sts for shoulder sides and 22 sts for back neck.

Made more decreases for V-neck shape:
- For Front side I started armhole decreases and the V-neck shaping at the same time, at cca 21 cm; I followed the pattern accordingly and made the V-neck decreases up to 11 sts remaining for each Front side. Matched the Back side length of 36 cm (94 rows);

Joined the Back and Front Sides with 3-neddle c/off:
- Used 3-needle cast off technique on WS: c/off 11 sts for one shoulder, work 22 sts for back neck, c/off next 11 sts (leaving the remaining 22 centre sts of back neck for the neck band to be joined later);

Picked up more sts for Neck and Arm Bands; made more Rib rnds; also used ‘Suspended Bind Off’ technique that gives a good loose finish around neck line (learned this from YouTube videos):
Neck Band:
- I picked up 82 sts for neck band with the work facing me on WS, this is starting first at right front side, then left front side, both at a ratio of 3 sts to 2 rows, then back neck sts from holder, as follows:
29 sts on right side, 1 st at middle-bar, 30 sts left side, 22 sts back neck = 82 sts.
I picked the sts on WS to get less holes and that vertical rib along the V-neck line - see photos.
I decreased before and after middle-bar V st and ribbed 1x1 for a total of 7 rnds (this total includes the pick-up and c/off rnds): 1 rnd pickup sts, 2 rnds blue, 2 rnds white, 1 rnd blue, then turned work on RS for the last 1 rnd cast off blue with ‘suspended bind-off’ on RS of work. The rib is cca 2-2.5 cm.
Arm Bands:
- Picked up 62 sts for each arm band; worked in the same manner as for the neck band.

Finished measurements:
Weight: cca 120g
Before blocking: Length - 36 cm;
Width across chest, at armpit - 32 cm
After blocking: Length - 37.5 cm;
Width across chest, at armpit - 34 cm

… and the cables and eyelets opened really nice :)

My ‘difficulty’ rating is medium due to the picking up sts for the Neck and Arm Bands

Really happy with the final outcome :) and after all these notes I’ll certainly make more of these!
