Doubled stitches to match yarn to size of tissue box

So I’ve gone a bit off-piste with this one! Already using a different gauge of hook and weight of yarn, for a different sized tissue box…. so my sides are 30 stitches instead of the 18? in the pattern.
I started the ears as suggested but then went back along the straight edge with a row of dc/htc/tc depending on how much indent there was and then a second row of dc.
Then, instead of sewing the ears on after I am including them in the crochet seam. My yarn is doubled up 2-ply to make a 4-ply yarn, so upon reaching the ear I split the yarn again and took one strand on the front loops of the ear to the front loops of the face panel, and the other strange on the back loops of the ear to the front loops of a side panel with dc. Actually two dc in each stitch on the front to see if that makes up for being half the ply…. pictures show how this is going (with red stitch markers) and how it ended up!

Even more off piste! I found that when all the sides were attached, my elephant was too big for the box - especially after I had been all round the bottom to do a neat hem. So I created a circle chain that would fit inside the base and attached it all round with dc. This had the effect of tucking the bottom edges inwards but the chain is still stretchy enough that it expands over the box to swap it in and out. See pictures if this makes no sense. All in all it’s a little loose and there is more care to be taken should I do this again, but I’ve learned a lot in the process. New stitches learned: surface crochet (for the eyes) and the I-cord for the tail!
