I have hooks with larger handles that would not fit the original pattern. I made 6 pockets on each side. 3 pockets on each side stick out more.

I altered it by SC in the front loop back up the 20 stitches. Then I 20 SC back down to the bottom. Then I DC in the front loops of the 30 DC row. I joined the sc and DC row by SL in the back loop of the DC row and front loop of the SC row.

Once the pocket is closed, I SL to the end of the pocket and SC in the remaining back loops of the SC for 20 stitches and SC into remaining 10 stitches to start a DC row (row 2).
