Started out with every intention of following the Rescued Battery Hen Jumper pattern, but then decided to knit in the round from the top down. Cast on with a different yarn weight altogether, and made knitting decisions on the fly:
It needed ribbing. And an empire waist (ha!). Nixed the tabs and the buttons (I couldn’t envision picking out buttons for a chicken, seeing how much I dislike picking out buttons for myself).
In the end kept a bunch of notes about the stitch counts, shaping and row counts, and some vague measurements. Realized I had written a pattern. The sweater is in the mail to the chicken, and I will tweak it after viewing the beta test garment. Whew.
Pattern
Using worsted weight yarn and #6 dpns, #7 needles, #7 dpns or #7 16” circular needles
M1 = lift bar between stitches place on left hand needle, and purl or knit it depending on the row (increases a stitch)
Knitted top down in ribbing the round, divided and worked back and forth separately for back and front, then rejoined and worked in the round in ribbing.
Turtleneck ribbing
Cast on 32 stitches for the neck (divided 8 stitches on each dpn), and join making sure not to twist stitches. Place marker for start of round.
Work in k1p1 ribbing for desired length to cover the area she’s being picked on. I think I did about 10 rows.
Divide for front and back
Place 8 stitches on a stitch holder for the front.
Place 24 stitches on size 7 needle for the back.
Back
Work back and forth in stockinette as below
row 1 (RS) k across (24 stitches)
row 2 (WS) p1 M1, p across until last stitch, M1 p1 (26 stitches)
row 3 k across
row 4 p across
row 5 k across
row 6 p across
row 7 k across
row 8 p1 M1, p across until last stitch, M1 p1 (28 stitches)
row 9 k across
row 10 p across
row 11 k across
row 12 p across
row 13 k across
row 14 p1 M1, p across until last stitch, M1 p1 (30 stitches)
row 15 k across
row 16 p across
row 17 k across
row 18 p across
row 19 k across
row 20 p1 M1, p across until last stitch, M1 p1 (32 stitches)
rows 21 - 34 work even without further increases (32 stitches)
Break yarn. Place stitches on holder
Front
Place 8 stitches from holder onto #7 needle. Attach yarn and work back and forth in stockinette as below:
row 1 (RS) k across
row 2 (WS) p across
row 3 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (10 stitches)
row 4 p across
row 5 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (12 stitches)
row 6 p across
row 7 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (14 stitches)
row 8 p across
row 9 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (16 stitches)
row 10 p across
row 11 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (18 stitches)
row 12 p across
row 13 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (20 stitches)
row 14 p across
row 15 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (22 stitches)
row 16 p across
row 17 k1 M1, k across to last stitch, M1 k1 (24 stitches)
rows 18 - 34 work even without further increases (24 stitches)
Don’t break yarn
Lower ribbing
Transfer all stitches to #7 dpns (or #7 16” circulars), join and place marker for start of round
Knit two rounds, then work 8 rounds of k1p1 ribbing (or as many as desired, by this point you could “wing” it ;) ).
Bind off in ribbing pattern. Weave in ends. Don’t block, because what’s the point?
