Using this pattern as a springboard for a set of gloves that have been lurking in my braaaaain for a while.
Cuff
1x1 rib because I prefer it. Added a setup row for the first cables so they’re not going straight into crosses.
Fingers
It took me EIGHT TRIES to get the index finger right. EIGHT.
- did it wrong
- didn’t like the way the stitches were divided over the fingers; index finger larger than middle finger, and the instructions for the ring finger just seemed really weird.
- redid it but got the maths totally wrong
- redid it the same way but realised the middle finger wasn’t correctly aligned with the pattern
- realised the maths was wrong and tried again
- did it exactly the same as the previous try
- realised the middle finger was going to be totally wrong
- finally managed it wooooooo Crazy.
So each finger got 13 stitches from the hand; middle finger getting six stitches on the back, lining up with the middle of the pattern. Index and ring done first, with 2 stitches cast on between them and the middle finger, then 3 stitches picked up either side of the middle finger, ending up with 16 sts for index/ring and 17 for middle.
Little finger: picked up 5 stitches (to make 13 sts total) as the intended 10sts looked a bit weedy next to the main fingers. It looks slightly misaligned because of the way the cable pulls, but it’s fine when worn.
Thumb: picked up 2 stitches (to make 17 sts) as otherwise it would have been smaller than the middle finger. Just above the top joint, I cast off and cast on four stitches to make a seedy peephole. Wait, no, I mean a touchscreen flap. That doesn’t sound much better. One of them, anyway.
Thrummed inserts: I was thinking about adding a pocket for some little handwarmer things (the type with the metal disc you snap to heat up the goo) but they were a bit too big. So I thought I’d try out some thrums, because who doesn’t like to stick their fingers in a nice bit of merino.
Bonus sewing FO: To keep all the pieces together, I decided to make a little hanging case for them, so they can chill out with my coat when they’re not being used. I picked a nice eye-searing coral to go with the neutral yarn, and clash with everything else on the back of the door. :D
