Loved making these mittens for my friend Sharon!
C/O 26 sts and divide into 2 using Magic Loop. Knit all st in very first row.
Single K/P cuff for 15 rows, then a double row of P. Then increase one st at the end and at the beginning of each row by knitting into front and then into back of first and last st in row. Then there will be 20 st on each side.
Palm side: Knit only. From last double pearl row, knit 14 rows. At row 15 on palm side, knit 1st st and then hold 5 in a clip for thumb. (for left mitten, K14, hold 5, K1) C/O 5 to replace held sts. At row 20 do another double pearl row. Then knit 20 more rows, and do another double pearl row. For remaining 8 rows, decrease 1 st on each side by K2 tog. Last row, gather all sts and secure.
Back side: Same as palm up to first double pearl row. Then K5, P2, K6, P2, K5 all rows except for the double pearl rows, which go all around both sides. Every 7th row, replace K6 sequence with K3/K3.
Note - I made the cables go to the right on the left mitten and to the left on the right mitten. I thought this added a little something. :-)
I love that I worked enough rows up to the thumb hole so that the cuff fits snugly on the wrist. My past mistake was making the thumb hole too soon! Glad I got it “mastered” now.
Do different next time - maybe put the double pearl rows only on the palm side, or omit altogether. The top double pearl row makes the fingertip area too bulky.
