Shirley's Yarns & Gifts in Hancock, Maine
August 14, 2020
Notes

I picked up this beautiful yarn at Shirley’s in Hancock, Maine. Australian beaches must truly be beautiful if the colors in this yarn are anything to go by.

First Modification. I knew I didn’t have enough yarn to complete the whole pattern, so I decided to skip rows 31 and 32, a second instance of the front post double crochet ridge, to make the yarn go further.

In the pineapple section (rows 33 to 38) I had to modify the pattern on either side of the point to make up for the “missing” eight stitches. I managed to add one back, which was fortunate, since I ended up with 168 stitches on each side at the end of row 40, which was just right for the row I planned to do next.

Second. Modification. I decided to skip the “fishnet” section, rows 41 through 52, and go straight to the edging. For row 53, one side of the foundation row needs to be a multiple of 5 ending in 5, plus 3. 168 stitches on a side worked just fine.

Modified Edging. There wasn’t enough yarn for all nine rows of the edging. I completed rows 53 to 55, as written, then continued with row 59 through 61. It was easy to make the transition. Row 59 in the modification was:

Ch 4, dc in first stitch, dc in first ch sp, sc in next two stitches, ch 6, # sc in second tr, sc in ch sp, sc in next tr, ch 2, skip sp, tr, sp, sc in next tr (5th tr), sc in ch sp, sc in next tr, ch 6 #,

2 sc

2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch sp middle

2 sc, #ch 6, sc in second tr, sc in ch sp, sc in next tr, ch 2, skip sp, tr, sp, sc in next tr (5th tr), sc in ch sp, sc in next tr #

ch 6, 2 sc, dc in last ch sp, (dc, ch, dc) in last stitch.

Row 60 was modified slightly to ch 4, dc in first stitch, dc in first ch sp, then skipping directly to pattern, ending the same way.

Similarly, row 61 begins ch 4, dc in first stitch, dc in first ch sp, sc, 2 dc in next st, before beginning pattern.

Beads. I decided to add some lavender beads at the top of each picot on the last row. I had enough yarn left over to single crochet along the top edge.

Notes on the yarn. The yarn reminds me of LionBrand’s Shawl in a Ball yarn. My first skein was perfect, with the color pattern repeating itself in reverse half way through. The second skein had two breaks in it, and the joins didn’t respect the color pattern. However, this gave me the opportunity to undo the joins and make my own, which turned out to be fortuitous, especially in the pineapple section.
