Notes

Pair nine in my yearly sock challenge of a pair a month. My overall aim with the project is to undertake either something new or challenging with each pair

For September I’m working on the unusual construction of Grun Ist Die Hoffnung. The sock is constructed from a centre square which makes the top of the foot, then the rest of the sock is shaped using short rows.

I started off with a pinhole cast on over 4 DPN’S. This is the first project this year I have had to bring out DPN’s for knitting in the round !

As I have tiny feet, I started the toe shaping as soon as I had worked the centre square. I continued with the diamond lace pattern throughout the toe.

I started the short row heel shaping as soon as I had completed the sole

The other major modification is the inclusion of the lace pattern across the leg. To achieve this, I worked two medallions and grafted(Kitchener stitch) the vertical edge to vertical edge to form a tube with live stitches at the top and bottom.

I picked up the live stitches all the way around the top of the tube (64) and worked in twisted rib for 2.5 cm.

Finally the bottom of the tube is grafted to the foot and heel stitches .That’s a lot of Kitchener stitch involved, but I think it is well worth it for the stunning multidirectional lace finish.

Instructions

  1. Work medallion as per pattern. Finish on round 23
  2. Knit toe, sole and heel as per pattern. Once heel turn is complete there will be 32 instep stitches and 32 heel stitches. Place these on to a length of waste yarn. Set aside.
  3. Work two more medallions as per pattern. Finish on round 23. There will be 32 sts on each side.of the medallion Place these on to a length of waste yarn.
  4. Keeping waste yarn (lifeline) intact, pick up 32 sts along each of two vertical edges. Using Kitchener stitch, graft these two vertical edges together.
  5. Keeping waste yarn (lifeline) intact, pick up 32 sts along each of two remaining vertical edges. Fold the piece in half along the seam that was grafted in step 4. Graft live stitches on second vertical edges together. This will form a tube with live stitches at the top and bottom.
  6. Keeping waste yarn (lifeline) intact, pick up 32 sts along bottom (horizontal) edge of leg medallion. Repeat across bottom edge of second medallion.
  7. Graft 32 sts from front of leg to 32 sts from instep
  8. Turn work. Graft 32 sts from back of leg to 32 sts from heel.
  9. The graft is complete. The light grey lifeline shows where the seams lie.
  10. Pick up 64 live stitches around top edge of leg. Work 2.5 cm rib for cuff. Rmoved all waste yarn/lifelines. Cast off with stretchy cast off of choice.
