The first sock in the UK Sock Knitters 2019 Challenge.1

There are 18 groups in the periodic table and this year I will be knitting a sock to represent an element from each of them. Click the link above to follow my progress on the whole project in one notebook post !

January’s Sock is based on the burn test for Potassium (K). Potassium is a silver metal that burns lilac when introduced to the blue gas of a bunsen flame.

The Gradient set was custom dyed by Pauline at Steampunk Sheep Yarns just for this design. The name was also Pauline’s idea - and now I seem to have also committed to thinking up a year of science puns !

For the first design I kept things simple. This is a gradient fade using different width of stripes to blend from one colour to another.

The P side of the work is intended to be worn facing outwards, but to make things quicker the sock is knit plain and then turned inside out. This means the yarn changes need to be twisted and carried up on the KNIT or facing side of the work.

To keep the flow of colours this design features and afterthought heel.
