10.20.2015: Ripped out the cuff and re-knitted with ribbing on US 6 (4mm) needles. The cuff looks much nicer and after almost an entire winter of wear they needed to be cleaned up a little. Shaved off a bunch of fuzzies. They are ready to be worn another winter!
I found a few patterns but none were really like what I was looking for.I liked this one the best and it is most like what I wanted, and doesn’t look to fussy to make changes. I have posted the modifications I made to the pattern below.
These changes will create a straight cuff and thick mitten. I added the alternating knit and purl rows at the cuff to keep it from rolling up and creating a cuff that is not ribbed.
For this pair of mittens I am using the Knit Picks US size 8 nickel plated interchangeable needles with the 40” cable.Using magic loop method.
1.4.15: First mitten done. I originally had done the 3 needle bo at the top of the body, but it seemed too bulky. I ripped it out and used Kitchener stitch instead. It did take 2 tries, but looks much better.
Also CO and began working on the second mitten! All is done except the thumb. The second is slightly smaller than the first, so I think I will wash before wearing to even them out.
1.7.15: The mittens are finished! I completed the thumb of the second on Monday and washed them that night. They took some time to dry after washing, but the wash really made a big difference. I got to wear them today finally, just in time for a very, very cold day. The high temp was below zero, and the wind chills are est. to be in the -20s. Brrr!
MODIFICATIONS: -------------------------
CO 30 sts using long tail cast on
Row 1 & 3: knit
Row 2 & 4: purl
Row 5 and on: knit
After 12 rows of stockinette st, begin increasing for thumb gusset as follows:
Row 1: k14, PM, m1L, k2, m1R, PM, k14
Row 2: knit around
Row 3: k to first marker, m1L, k to next marker, m1R, k to end
Continue repeating rows 2 & 3 until 8 sts have been made. I ended with the row 2. Slip thumb sts onto a spare needle or waste yarn.
In the space where the thumb goes, I also CO 2 sts with the e-wrap co.
Continue to knit around until mitten is 1” below fingertips. For me that’s 20 rows.
To decrease at the top, I follow the written pattern, taking into account that I have only 30 sts.
The thumb is also worked per written pattern, also taking into account one fewer stitch.
