I used leftover skeins from afghans i made for friends, which gave a color block effect. The top and bottom back blocks and the right sleeve were Regency(grey/green), the bottom left and top right blocks were plum, the bottom right and top left blocks and the left sleeve were Barrington (violet, dark blue and grey). I didn’t like the way the front hung, so i added a 4 inch border down the front of each side in the plum, it also gave it some needed added width and the top can be flipped back giving a collar/lapel effect. I didn’t put on a collar, or any buttons. I prefer to cross one side over the other and close it w/ a shawl pin.
I didn’t like the “bat-like” sleeve, so i sewed up the side seams and the bottom knitted blocks farther then called for, and made a narrower sleeve at the body. Instead of narrowing the sleeve to the wrist as the pattern calls for, i made a straight sleeve, intending it to go to the wrist. However, as i made the first one, i ran out of Regency just below elbow-length, so the sleeves became “bracelet-length.” :)……….if you are making a children’s Einstein, the wide sleeves make it easier to put on.
The colors are not clear in the pics. Enlarge the close up to get the truest colors. The back and the right sleeve are more green than they appear in the first and second pic.
I think i started it last winter, but put it aside to make some other things, and also because i wasn’t liking the pattern and hadn’t yet decided how to improvise on it. I picked it up again in Sept and got my idea of how to finish it and finished it in Oct. It’s very easy to make since it is all straight knitting.
I have had compliments on it every time i’ve worn it. The color blocks are what make it attractive and interesting. I usually wear two long decorative “hat-pin” type jewelry pieces on the label which i can also use as closures. It is perfect for spring/fall evenings and is glamourous enough to were to dinner or concerts. i love it!
