Cast on 48 stitches instead of 44, and used a 4mm needle for the cuff. I divided the mitten evenly (into 24 stitches per side), and added the 4 extra stitches so that the cable pattern was centred on the outer mitten.

I started the thumb increases on row 7, and added a row 60 where I decreased a further four stitches.
