Done! Even kitchener stitched the ends together — had to undo my cast on and knit 2 more rows. Next time I will make the thin portion longer; when I put this on, the increase and decrease ends get scrunched by my hair.
Also, I think there must be a way to fix this — the way the pattern increases, I always get a rounded bulgy spot. I think it would be good to skip one or two increases and just start into the lace pattern without the ssk and k2tog for the first row of it. That would get you to the right number of stitches. Going to try it next time. (The decrease side lays perfectly flat.)
