My daughter loved the Rainbow Chaser hat so much, I decided to make her a pair of fingerless mitts to go with it. Strangely enough, my son fell in love with the mitts and now he wants them.

I’m embarrassed to say how many times it took me to adapt my hat pattern to the mitts (6). Had I done the math first, it would have been very simple, but I was just doing trial and error and hoping it would all fall into place. Lesson learned… ;)

So here’s the pattern for the mitts:

CO 30 stitches.
Knit in 2x2 ribbing for 8 rows.

Pattern:
* After finishing the ribbing, K1, M1 for the first stitch to start the chaser pattern. (This is the first stitch in the K3 of the pattern -- only do this once at the start of the pattern).

Pattern:
K3, K2tog, YO * repeat

Then when you reach the length you want for the thumbhole to begin (about 5” from edge of mitt), begin short rows by turning the work each time you reach the point you start the thumbhole.

So row 1: regular pattern to end of row.
Turn project and work pattern from back.

** I started a second pair of mitts and for some reason, the pattern I wrote for the first pair wasn’t matching up to where I was on the second pair. So now I have two completely different sets of instructions for the thumb hole. **

Row 2: YO, P2tog, P3 * repeat until end of row. End on P3. Turn.

Row 3: YO, K2, K2tog, YO * repeat reg. pattern. End with YO K1. Turn.

Row 4: YO, P2, YO, P2tog, then repeat P3, YO, P2tog to end of row. Turn.

Row 5: K1, K2tog to end. Last 4 stitches K2, K2tog to end row. (not sure how I got off -- I think it may have been the extra starting YOs on rows 3 and 4). Turn.

Row 6: p4 (making up for extra pattern stitch), YO, P2tog. Then P3, YO, P2tog to end. Turn.

Row 7: k1, YO, repeat reg. pattern. Turn.

Row 8: YO, P2tog, P3, repeat. Purl last two stitches together. Turn and begin regular pattern again, connecting top of thumb hole and continuing in the round.

---------------- original notes for thumb hole ------------

Row 2: P2, YO, P2tog. Then P3, YO, P2tog to end of row. Turn.

Row 3: K1, K2tog, YO, then repeat regular pattern. Turn.

Row 4: P3, YO, P2tog, then repeat to end of row, ending on a P2tog. Turn.

Row 5: YO first stitch, then continue with regular knit pattern. Turn.

Row 6: P2tog, YO, p3 to end of row. Turn.

Row 7: K1, K2tog, YO, repeat regular pattern to end. Turn.

Row 8: YO, P2tog, p3 to end. Turn. Continue regular knit pattern, connecting stitches from top of thumb hole.

Knit regular pattern all the way around for 1” (reconnecting ends of thumbhole), then finish last inch in 2x2 ribbing.
