12-19-2020 A LOT OF WORK, BUT WORTH IT
Soaked (water was really murky, but colors did not run) blocked and dried
12-18-2020 Right sock finished
Honestly, though a knitter would know the left from the right, it doesn’t really matter
12-13-2020 Knit up to round 75.
12-12-2020 Knit up to round 54 finishing heel and heel turn. So nice to have my notes below to remind me how I knit the wraps and turns
12-11-2020 Knit up to round 30 …
12-10-2020 Knit up to round 10 …
Trying to understand why right sock is knit reading the chart from left to right? Only a knitter might notice
Cast On right sock like my first. Finished ribbing and started fair isle.
11-04-2020 Curious about the name of the heel and heel turn and hoping to help other knitters, e-mailed Marie Wallin inquiring. This is the response I received: “Thanks for your email. No, I don’t know if the heel type on the Lupin socks has a name but it is one of the easiest types, hence why I used it. Glad you are enjoying knitting them.”
11-02-2020 Left sock finished
My hubby has a sinus cold (NOT COVID) so I get a day to knit. Finished the fair isle and knitting the Toe. Sock is a bit big for my small foot. Should fit my sister just fine.
11-01-2020 Knit up to row 67.
YUP, definitely also wrap and turn on rows 17-29 (actually the heel turn)!!!! The stitch before you slip a stitch to wrap is the stitch you pickup the wrap properly and knit together on right side (and purl together on wrong side). Then slip the next stitch purl-wise and wrap and turn … therefore, the last row is purl 30 on the wrong side - IT WORKS !!! My heel looks just like the picture
As this is the left sock, my beginning and end tails of color F (Raw) are together on the right side of the heel. To avoid a hole, remember to begin row 52 with picking up 1 stitch, knit it and then slip this new stitch back on to left needle and k2tog, then proceed to knit across Instep. I also picked up 1 stitch on other side of Instep before heel to avoid a hole. I picked up a stitch and knit with color H (silver Birch) slipped it back on to left needle and k2tog to stay in fair isle pattern (3 Silver Birch sts). Continued to knit fair isle pattern across heel stitches completing row 52.
So after knitting row 16 of heel, I understand how to properly pick up the wrap and knit (or purl) it, but a bit confusing when directions state “when working back across wrapped sts work the wrapped st and the wrapping loop tog as one sts) and turn.” No wraps on rows 17-29?? Picture on page 48 of GENTLE definitely shows wraps. So I will frog
and attempt again
Think I finally got it!! On knitted rows, I kept moving my yarn forward before slipping stitch purl-wise and turning. Must remember to slip stitch purl-wise and then turn, which wraps the stitch when you move the yarn forward after the turn to purl.
10-31-2020 After Googling, numerous YouTube Videos on wraps and turns and 3 attempts, have to sleep on the construction of this heel and heel turn
10-30-2020 Learning something new
Attempted to understand the heel with so many wraps and turns …
10-29-20 Knit up to round 47.
10-28-2020 Knit up to round 26 carrying yarn every 3 stitches.
I do not wait to weave loose tails. I either carry the new color 12-14 stitches behind the working yarn before knitting with it and then carry the ending color 12-14 stitches behind the new working color. If I cannot carry the new or ending yarn, I wait to weave in the loose tail after I have knit a few rounds.
Switched to my Zing 12” size US 3 circular to begin fair isle. The colors are MAGICAL
10-27-2020 OMG
How does Marie Wallin do it ?!?! Her yarn is AMAZING
So soft and squishy comfy for these socks
I foresee knitting PRIMROSE in 2021
Finished Cuff and will begin fair isle tomorrow.
With my Zing 12” size US 2 circular, successfully completed Long Tail Cast On for my left sock and joined in the round. (I always add 1 extra cast on stitch and slip my first stitch over my last stitch to join in the round.). Discovered when knitting my husband’s Beatle Mittens that KTBL on the first round makes a really nice set up edge and adds extra stretch to the opening. Many THANKS to Marie Wallin for introducing me to Zing circular needles
I first experienced knitting with my first Zing circulars in 2018 when I bought my Scalloway Tam kit. Zing Sizes US 2 and US 3 40cm circulars were included in the kit. … have purchased many various sizes and lengths on EBay. Discovered by accident that 9” and 12” circulars are perfect to knit socks
So much easier than dpns and Magic Loop !!!
Time to finally start this gorgeous pair of fair isle socks that I have been OOGLING ever since I purchased Marie Wallin’s GENTLE from The Wooly Thistle on January 25, 2020
I tried to buy the Lupin Sock kit several times on Marie Wallin’s website, but always SOLD OUT! After e-mailing Marie Wallin inquiring, I was informed a few kits would be available the end of September. The day I received an e-mail informing shopping would start at noon, I managed to put a kit in my cart, but when I immediately proceeded to checkout, POOF it was gone
So since I bought GENTLE, I decided to just find all the yarn. (Most expensive pair of socks now in my collection
) Success online at Tribe Yarns - wonderful service and since no VAT, the very reasonable international shipping fee was worth it.
