Because I didn’t want a fold-over brim, I cast on 72 sts and worked in 1x1 rib for 1.5 in. Then I increased by 8 sts around (total = 80) and worked in st st for 3.75 in before beginning decreases (9 rows white, 5 yellow, 3 brown, 5 yellow, and the rest white). If I did this again, I’d start the stripes sooner, since they’re not really centered vertically.

I got gauge with size 8 needles, but I used size 7 needles throughout because I wanted the hat to be on the smaller side. This gave a hat that would fit a 12- to 18-month-old, approximately. It’s a little snug on my 17-month-old Arlo (in the photos), but it fits 12-month-old Everett nicely.

I used my Clover pompom maker (2.5in) from Star to make the pompom on top. So fun!
