Next class project will use 5/2 or 3/2 cotton. Since I don’t have any 3/2 (I ordered some), I’m using my yarn from my 5/2 cotton stash. I am going to weave chunks (size determined at weaving time, alternating with tabby and borders.
Journal
2015-05-12: Wind & chain up warp. Ready for class.,
2015-05-15: Warp loom. This time I put the raddle on the loom and then placed the warp on the raddle. Added my 2 selvage threads and begin weaving. I started weaving and wasn’t getting the nice solid color blocks. So, I looked at the drafts again and it looks like they double the pattern weft yarn. So I need to double my 5/2. The first 2 spools were easy, since I already wound a single 5/2 in my pattern color. I’ll probably have to wind off a single spool and then take the end from the spool and the cone and wind 2 spools of 5/2 doubled.<p>
Complete 1 pattern repeat of 98-a. Complete leading hemstitch.
2015-05-15: Complete 4” weft.
2015-05-16: Oops. I started the first pattern on the second part of the repeat, so I’m going to add an extra half repeat to end at the “correct” spot. I don’t want big patches of tabby where one pattern ends and the next begins.
2015-05-17: 44” weft completed. This one is moving slower, since I have to do a bit of planning at each pattern change.
2015-05-18: 77” weft completed. Fulled scarf; hanging to dry…
2015-05-19: Weave in ends; twist fringe; wash, dry & iron scarf
Summary
-
Warp: 96 ends in 3 bundles of 32 and groups of 4 + 2 independent selvage threads.
-
Warp is 34.1 grams by weight (157.7 yards). If i calculate it by ends I end up wit 326.67 yards. I’m guessing the weight of the cone is in error. I’m going with my calculated warp figures. After warping, my cone weighs 419.9, just in case sampler requires use of my warp color.
-
Starting weights: Eggplant cone weighs in at: 504.4 grams; sponge cone weighs 508.7 grams.
-
Ending weights: Eggplant: 429.4 ; dark teal: 369.9; sponge=496.2.
-
Used: Eggplant: 75 grams; Sponge: 12.5 grams; Dark Teal: 122 grams.
-
Sugar & Cream is used as waste yarn in the weaving process: crochet chain tie, header & footer.
-
Took me a little bit of time to figure out that my pattern weft must be doubled (probably why the instructor asked for something like ultra pima fine). my tabby weft is single, like the warp.
-
start and end scarf with 6 picks of tabby.
-
Each pattern includes the final pick of tabby as part of its repeat.
-
I am alternating between 98-a, 98-b & 98-c. 99 a-f will interleave between the full patterns from page 98. There will be 4 picks tabby between each change. I am going to use 2 colors on each of the border patterns.
-
98-a will be 5 repeats; 98-b will be 2 repeats (I may adjust this for looks; 98-c will be 5 repeats.
-
main pattern start and stops will be modified to work with each border -- i don’t want large swaths of tabby at the change.
-
I really like 98-c. It will make a good scarf.

Next Time
- eliminate the 4 picks of background between the patterns. As long as I alternate the block starts (treadle 3 & 5) it should look pretty good.
