I’m feeling so blue because I’m not keeping this project…sniff sniff.

The recipient is much larger than the pattern size calls for. Have to make shawl to fit app. 58”x16” around her shoulders and chest, and length from tip of shoulder to elbow….

The pink won’t be used…just threw it in the shot as these are the same yarn brand and type.

Sat 7th June 2014:

Did a test with the denim-blue yarn just to understand the pattern. Found a dusty pink colour that almost matched the one in the book and recipient agreed to use it. Have switched to this as beginning of shawl.

Row 1:
It took a while, but I understand it now. The ch-1 spaces are easier to find if you count the 5 sc in the ch-9 loops. Once I got the pattern memorized, it was easier to go along.

Row 2:
After a few exasperating rounds of ripping out, I finally got the idea of where my row 2 ch-9 loops had to join with the ch-1 spaces on row 1( on the second pass or tops of row 1).
The diagrams really helped, and what also worked for me, was counting 4 sections of 5 sc (in the ch-9 petals) to make the “square-shape” in between the rows.

Row 3:

Easier to do as Row 2 was like a practice run.

Wed 11th June 2014

Rows 1, 2 and 3 completed. Attempting to join the ends of shawl together with the twist as directed.
It was confusing at first, but I paper-clipped the petals to each other where I needed to do the ss joining and it really helped me out.

Tues 17th June 2014

Almost finished second colour of denim blue. You can see with my paper clips where I twisted and joined the first section to itself. The green paper clip is in the middle of the that section.
Only 4 strand to weave in after all this…YAY!

2 pm, same day…upon finishing the last blue flower and attempting to join the first flower of Row 4…..I discovered that I attached colour B of yarn in the WRONG PLACE….ARGH!!!! Have now ripped out ENTIRE section of second colour….after spending one week on this….. will restart tomorrow…too upset with myself…

Thurs 19th June

Restarted colour B - Denim Blue - My mistake..yarn should have been joined at a tip of any flower petal. I had originally joined the yarn to a junction where two petals tips were joined to each other…WRONG!!
This can clearly be seen in the pic with the paperclips. The blue flower on the right was commenced at the wrong junction.

Chain 5, then chain 9 and continue as pattern directions. When I came to the end of this row, at the last (3rd) joining of petals on rnd 2 of row 3, I joined to the first ch-9 loop of the first petal with a slip stitch. There won’t be any sc’s in this ch-9 loop. So when completing second pass of Row 4, I will have to sc 5 into a petal “after” the first joining petal. It is working this way for me. So happy that I was able to finish this row in only 2 days.

Have lapsed in posting updates but managed to complete without any further problems. Also, washed the shawl in my washer and it came out fine :)
