This is a basic beanie design and my original hat, affectionately named the Ollie Hat, that began my journey into crochet hat making.
I made one of each of these for my Mom, who asked for a hat that fit her head, and in colors she liked = black, brown and her favorite pattern - houndstooth. After so many requests for these from various people in my circle, I decided to sell them at local scholarship or fundraiser craft markets at $15 each at the encouragement of my Mom who said I should stop giving them away!
Posting them here now as I’ve mentioned these hats on my podcast and if someone wishes to make them, here is the pattern. These are also great hats to make for charities such as chemo caps (Caron Simply Soft yarn is great for these) or for unhoused individuals, any WW is fine as yarn will be warm, durable and allergy free, as long as it’s a soft yarn.
PATTERN:
Start with magic circle, double crochet 10 stitches into the magic circle for 1st round. Increase to 20 on 2nd round, 30 on 3rd round, etc. until you get to 70 stiches on round 7.
Stop increasing here and crochet up to row 13. On row 14, half-double crochet with another color. Row 15, double crochet in back loop only of the hdc (gives it a raised stitch/edge effect.
For a men’s size, I start with 11 stitches (total of 77 at row 13 and add color stripes as shown in photos & all double crochet).
Row 16 & 17 - double crochet
Row 18 & 19 - single crochet
If need more length continue with single crochet for another round. Attach a flower (crochet or store bought for extra design element if desired.
It’s also one of those items I have in the markets that always sells out, asked for by popular demand, and still remains at $15 in memory of my Mom, who passed away a year after I began my selling journey.

Photos are of hats made and sold at craft markets. Embellishing with a large button also gives them a fashionable look.
