Notes

Identical pattern to Amaryllis Tablecloth in June 1989 Magic Crochet magazine, pattern no 19

making curtains for my mom.

Modifications: using extended dc throughout. Skipped last three rows of pattern. Joining each motif on last row. Each square is 27”. Each square took approx. 7 hours, probably closer to 6 hours with concentration and no reading while crocheting.

Each square takes approx 571 yards. Yes, I weighed and did the math! Bear in mind this yardage cuts out the last three rounds of the pattern. I think this yardage would apply regardless of size of thread.

This pattern really exemplifies the versatility of both motif work and filet! Using a large (size 3 thread) I made ginormous curtains. But I like this pattern so much I think I’ll use size 10 or 20 thread and make a runner.
There’s no limit to what can be made- bedspread, tablecloth, cushion covers, all sizes of curtains, maybe even clothing. And I’m still thinking!

Thanks to Seabaum for the idea for a sheath instead of loops to hang the curtains. I made loops, was definitely not happy with them bc drooping, but my quarantine brain was not quite agile. When Seabaum mentioned that she did a sheath to hang her knit curtains, I thought about it. I made a very lacy 10 rows of mesh across the top and fell in love (again). So my suggestion to all curtain makers: use a sheath for the hanging rod to go through instead of loops - no drooping!

Finally got around to taking pictures after hanging up the curtains. Everyone is happy with the look.
Short version: yes, I would do this again, easily a few times more! Making the motifs made it a manageable, portable project, and adding the sheath at the top for the curtain rod was by far the hardest part of the project bc I had to sit still and it was way too big at that point to carry it anywhere.
I can also see this kind of curtain where one can use a sheer (or not so sheer) curtain, almost as a lining, and completely change the look of the room depending on what colour the under-curtain is.
