If your mitts are for adults, I recommend continuing the length of the gusset in order to add a couple more stitches, and to hold 15 or even 17 stitches for the thumb. The 13 called for is too few in my opinion.
I think these mitts are adorable for gifts. Given with a bottle of fingernail polish that matches the squares no matter what color you choose would make any girl, teen, or woman happy.
