Using lace yarn doubled. Attempting to finish this before my mother’s birthday in mid-July. Knitting with wool in the summer, what am I on?
Finished dimensions: 78” x 10.5”
Note: There’s lots of little number errors in the chart. The chart itself is fine, some of the numbers inside the diamonds are off.
Also should note the designer’s knitting is very loose to my typically ‘normal’ gauge. I highly recommend either doing a gauge swatch beforehand or go up at least 2 needle sizes, otherwise your project will be much smaller than suggested.
5/6 - I’m halfway through Chart 2 (middle of the biggest diamond) and I’m shocked how quickly I’m knitting this. I’m keeping to my plan of knitting only when cool enough and until my hands start feeling clammy. So far a fun knit that keeps my brain occupied. I screwed up some of the ‘s1, k2tog, psso’ early on, instead doing k3tog, oops. It’s not really noticeable unless you look real hard.
5/19 - Done with Chart 2! Woot! So far it’s an easy knit as long as your diamond count is correct. I don’t know how many times I’ve screwed up the row just after the k3togs, thinking the next k2tog should go in one spot, but it should be one stitch over. And then I continue on without counting until I reach the next set of k3togs.
5/27 - Ok, so I did that thing I tend to do when I’m unhappy and frogged the whole thing and started again. I wasn’t pleased with how stiff and short the project was (24” x 9 1/2” halfway through Chart 3) so it was time for a do over. To be fair, I didn’t bother making a swatch because it’s a scarf and typically it doesn’t matter. What I discovered was my gauge ended up being way off, as I noticed several other people’s were smaller too (mine was at least 32 sts/4” on US 2), and the designer must knit a lot looser than I do. So now I’ve CO with US 4s to increase my gauge to about 22-24 sts/4” and the fabric is more fluid. The row gauge is still off, but I may repeat Chart 3 to make up for the shorter length.
6/5 - Finished Chart 2. I like this ‘looser’ knit more. Obviously it’s longer and wider so maybe I won’t need to repeat Chart 3.
6/15 - Reached the halfway point. With a tad ‘blocking’ stretch and doubled, the stole is about 60”. I guess I’ll be doing Chart 3 twice to lengthen. Better longer than coming up short.
7/6 - Halfway through the “Chart 3” repeat. Since I decided to repeat Chart 3 to lengthen, I decided to slightly modify the pattern (as seen in Pic 2) by making 2 larger diamonds between the two largest ones. It felt more appropriate than having a bunch of little diamonds in the middle. I also made the two largest ones go the full width of the stole instead of stopping 5 sts before the edging.
7/23 - Finished. About a week later than I wanted, but due to the death of my grandma, some days it was too hard to do anything, plus it was hot and humid. I didn’t like how Chart 4 was looking so I frogged back and knit as Chart 1. It looks a little weird having two different edgings, but it looks better. I could’ve blocked wider but I like the elongated diamonds.
Yarn Notes: I realize because my yarn is unravelled from a sweater, so YMMV. Some things I noticed were it wasn’t as soft as traditional merino, could be from dry cleaning or a low grade merino, and the yarn definitely bloomed after washing.
