ended up making them asymmetric, one pretty close to the original pattern and one with more purl breaks in between. used a simple german short rows heel over 24 stitches.

for the heel, did 4 decrease rounds with one stockinette row in between, then decreased until I had 8 stitches left and then just pulled them together
