Overview:

Fantastic pattern; straightforward, clear and easy to follow.

Mods:

  • first and last edge st ktbl
  • for loose edge, add yo after first and before last edge st on RS, drop on WS

Yarn:
Using my kinda-screwed-up ombre attempt; it’s very subtle and not sure how visible the color change will be once knit up…will overdye the shawl if it looks too boring.

Notes:
105g to start
Beads Miyuki size 6 color lined: pale topaz lined with green from Chevron Trading Post.

Blocked measurements: 26” down center front, 60” across widest point

5/3:
Cast on.

5/4:
Chart E row 43: st markers move (last 3sts of the repeat become the first 3 of the 7-1).
These small shifts are pretty obvious and intuitive but still gave me a scare at first while mindlessly plodding along following the chart.

5/5:
Finished Chart F…this thing is going to be big and already kinda worried I won’t have enough yarn…the last 200y is a very pale shade of green and not confident I’ll be able to get a lighter shade if I try to dye more…but going to white/undyed seems too abrupt. Maybe knit the last bit with undyed if I run out, then give the whole shawl a quick dip in green?

5/6:
Started Chart G. My 1/1RC looks like crap (uneven and sloppy) when I knit it as suggested, no matter how careful I try to be (which is too bad because it’s much simpler than the way I have to do it); I’m sure it has to do with the way I knit/tension, because everyone else’s looks great…so I knit it as follows:
-slip two together knitwise
- slip back to left needle purlwise (sts are now twisted with second st ready to be knit
-knit each tbl
Also have to be mindful to work all crossed sts and the beaded ktbl’s in between them a bit looser, both on RS and WS…between my knitting (which tends to be on the tighter side) and the crossed and beaded sts (both of which need a bit more length), my first couple of crossed rows were really tight; subsequent rows much better.

5/8:
Chart G row 97: skipped yo is skipped every 5th repeat…so in the last blue repeat of every red repeat.
Had a brain fart and misinterpreted these instructions the first time.

First color change begins towards the end of Chart G, so ~200y/25% used…maaaaybe just enough yarn after all? I’m terrible at estimating.

5/12:
Chart J row 123: st markers move (last 2sts of the repeat become the first 2 of the double decrease of the next repeat).

Chart K row 133: st markers move (first st of the next repeat becomes last st of the sskp)

Had to turn the last sskp of the 3rd red repeat into a k2tog in order to line everything up--everything else fell into place, just was missing the extra st needed to make a double decrease. Checked the previous row and all looked right, but I must have missed something as no one else had an issue with that decrease.
I really need to learn to put it down when I’m tired (hard to do when my knitting time is limited and generally relegated to late in the evening, after classes, work and kiddo’s bedtime). …found the oops later--I’d missed half of a double yo directly below in the previous row; because I count hexmesh starting and ending with the decreases, when the repeat bisects the mesh and the count starts and ends with a yo it’s easy for me to miss that first yo and slip back to starting with a decrease if I’m not paying attention.

5/14:
Started Chart M…two more charts and 25g left…totally going to run out.

5/16:
Pretty damn close--just 13” left over after the last chart (including optional WS row; knew I wouldn’t have enough for the bind off so decided to try for the purl row with what I had left and barely made it).

5/17:
Picoting away with some undyed of the same yarn; will dip the whole shawl in the sage end color.

5/19:
Bind off done (~23y, added to skein total above for simplicity instead of as a separate yarn) and shawl dipped in sage green at 2% wof for just a minute or so. Bind off is still much lighter than the bottom of the shawl but was afraid that leaving it in the dye pot any longer would ruin the already subtle gradient…will see how it looks dry and may dip again.

5/20:
Wet blocked and dried, then steam blocked for good measure. Leaving the color alone--any more overdyeing would definitely cover the gradient.
