Overview
As others have noted, the pattern is pretty straightforward but…if making the star stitch version, ADD REPEATS (unless you want a tiny neck scarf/collar thingy). Like, more than you think.
For some reason, the two options of shawl body (star stitch or stockinette) result in different size shawls if knit as written (this is NOT mentioned in the pattern).
The star stitch instructions have you stop at 109sts while the stockinette version instructs you to knit until 181sts--no idea why…i can’t think of a reason for this inconsistency; it would have been just as easy to write the star st instructions for 181sts. Both versions include instructions for enlarging and photos of different sized shawls with stitch counts used for each (though difficult to determine scale when not modeled on a human body), but I can see how the discrepancy can lead to confusion, frustration and disappointment, particularly for newer knitters.
Looking at previous projects, it looks like those who ended up with a decent sized shawl had enough stitches in the body for 20-23 repeats of Chart 1.
Both versions should read (under Shawl Body): You can stop after any even repeat of Row 2; number of sts (between the border sts) should be multiple of 8 after decreasing them by 5 before continuing with Chart 1.
If using stitch markers to delineate repeats, be prepared to shuffle them back and forth…a lot. Not the end of the world but definitely slows things down.
Prob not for beginners--I’d recommend having a few lace patterns under your belt, familiarity with charts and definitely the ability to read your knitting. If--looking at a chart--you can count the number of stitches a row consumes and produces and thus determine above which stitch of the preceding row any given stitch should fall, you’ll be fine (WS rows are just purled).
-Mods
- first and last edge stitches ktbl
- directional increases in shawl body instead of yo’s (m1L on right side, m1R on left)
- garter stitch tab and first WS row of shawl body knit on US 1.5s, then switched to US 2s for two rows, then US 3s for remainder. US 4s for lace. In retrospect, I should have done the garter stitch tab on US 2/2.5s and moved immediately to 3s for the rest of the body; worried the smaller stitch size of the first couple of rows will pull in and impede the necessary stretching to block out the hump.
Yarn
I love this yarn to bits; I’d been coveting some DDD for over a month, so when I finally picked one and it arrived, I immediately dropped all other wips to knit it up asap. It’s just gorgeous--so soft with pops of texture due to the linen, and the colors are unbelievable…so rich and multi-layered (and if Diana dyed wool-based yarn, I’d never have a reason to shop anywhere else). Wish I’d grabbed several more skeins and can’t wait for the shop to reopen!
Notes
Star stitch body
22 repeats (181sts in body, not including edge sts)
~100g to start (forgot to weigh)
Beads Miyuki size 6 silver lined rootbeer from Chevron Trading Post.
4/16: Cast on the monster 130 row garter stitch tab (surely there must be a better way?). Forgot to weigh the skein beforehand.
4/17: Working away at star stitch body. As a somewhat tight knitter, it’s challenging to have to knit with barely any tension; even light tension makes the 3-3 st difficult to complete.
Not loving the long garter tab--the exaggerated hump, the lumpy bumpy garter edge…hoping it’ll disappear with aggressive blocking--it’s really glaring at the moment because it’s so big--65st picked up from garter tab! Next time I would slip the last stitch on the outside edge of the tab (or find another way to start the same gently sloping shape, which I actually really like as a change from the usual crescent).
Note: Once shawl body is complete, do not increase after edge sts on the WS! Beginning with Chart 1, WS is just purled across.
4/19: Body finished, 85g left. Started Chart 1.
Stitch markers move on rows 9, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27.
4/22: Chart 1 finished, stitch count 545. 62g left.
4/23: Started Chart 2. Somehow ended up with an extra stitch before the repeats (all repeats lined up somehow but I think I missed the double decrease at the start of row 29) so fudged it.
Stitch markers move on rows 3, 11, 15, 21.
Row 13: The last set of double decreases (after the repeat) should be reversed (to lean towards the center) in order to match the other side.
Written instructions for crochet bind off (last page) should be labeled Row 23, not 55.
Again, as others have noted, this chart isn’t centered and the rows don’t stack according to the motif; this does make it more difficult to visualize the pattern and catch mistakes but somehow this bothers me less than the constantly moving stitch markers and no mention of the size difference between the two shawl body options.
4/26: Only five more pattern rows and a bind off (that will likely take all day) to go! I might actually finish by the end of the weekend (barring any major mishaps).
4/29: Senior dog fell gravely ill on Friday, gave me a major scare and kept me occupied so no knitting over the weekend but almost done today, just bind off left. 38g left after Chart 2.
4/30: My crochet skills leave much to be desired, especially with such a tiny hook…very tedious.
The crochet bind off instructions are excellent, however--every stitch is charted (missing one ch3 symbol to the left of the repeat, but pretty obvious what should go there), includes diagrams for non-crocheters showing how to work each stitch and written out instructions.
Got a bit faster by halfway through, though not much neater--my stitches are pretty sloppy and I’m sure I’m pulling them too tight but anxious to be done so I can wear it…I adore this yarn--it makes me so happy and I can’t wait to wrap myself in it.
35g left after bind off.
5/2: The lace wanted to be blocked super crescent-y but that left a lot of loose, excess fabric in the center of the body. Had to compromise and not open up the lace as much as I normally would, and block with minimal tension on the body--just enough to eliminate the hump (which kinda sorta blocked out but I still don’t love it--with such a long tab the transition from garter tab to edge sts is very obvious, maybe due to the smaller needles I used for the tab and the dropped yo’s I routinely add to the edge sts…likely not necessary with the slower increase rate in this shawl).
Final shape ended up being a wide U--more of a crescent than I expected but still pretty…and again, this yarn could be knit into a lumpy rag and still look glamorous and beautiful.
Pics to come.
Body: ~15g used
Chart 1: 23g
Chart 2: 24g
Bind off: 3g
364 beads
After blocking: 16” down center, 44” across widest part
10/01
Considering frogging--despite adding repeats, it’s still not big enough for me and I never reach for it, and the weird giant garter tab hump that didn’t completely block out really bugs me…the yarn is too precious to live in something I don’t love.
