I made these jar toppers for my daughter and her closest school friends as end-of-school-year gifts, as they finished 5th Grade and are moving to middle school. Their elementary school mascot is a koala, hence the crochet koalas wearing little graduation caps.

I used the koala pattern by Nice and Cosee: head (up to round 21), ears and nose. I made the nose a bit smaller and completely changed how to make the mouth. For the ears, instead of attaching yarn strands I cut a small piece of fur yarn (about 2cm per ear) and sewed it to round 7 on the front side of the ear before attaching the ear to the head.

I did not use a pattern for the lid cover. I finished it with a round of crab stitches.

I sewed the head to the lid cover, then glued the cover to the jar lid using hot glue.

I often repurpose glass jam jars when I make my jar toppers, but as these were gifts for children I decided to buy some 8oz plastic craft jars instead.

2.75mm crochet hook for everything.
8mm safety eyes.

With 1 skein of grey yarn (100g) I made 4 complete jar toppers, plus 1 head.
