I wanted to make some amigurumi snakes to give to our neighbours and to my husband’s coworkers as Lunar New Year gifts, and purchased 2 different patterns. I could tell from the photos, even before I bought the pattern, that this one would require more time to make.

This is a very cute Lunar New Year Snake, with such an adorable expression. The pattern is well written, but it would have been really useful if the designer had added the approximate amount of yarn needed (neither Etsy nor Ravelry had this information when I purchased the pattern, and the pattern itself doesn’t have that information either). To be fair I must admit that I did not contact the designer to ask about yarn quantities.

I only had one 50g skein of green cotton DK yarn (something I brought with me when I moved from the UK to the US, and not one I could easily or quickly find here if I needed more); I wasn’t sure I would have enough yarn to finish it. Since I was running out of time, I parked this project and used the other snake pattern to make the gifts.

It turns out I actually had enough green yarn to make the Prosperity Snake!

The pattern calls for white and beige yarns for the snake belly (I couldn’t tell that from the photos), but I only used white.

Instead of flat back glue-on eyes I used regular 9mm safety eyes (I placed them between rounds 9 and 10, with 10 stitches between the eyes). For the nostrils I used 3mm beads, which I sewed between rounds 15 and 16, 3 stitches apart.

The snake is 13.5cm tall. The base has a diameter of 9.5cm.

2mm hook for the entire project.

All sc stitches were made using the yarn under / yarn over technique. This uses a little bit more yarn.

Green: 31g
White: 15g
Red: 2g
Light yellow: 4g
Dark yellow: 2g
Oddments of pink (cheeks)
