Notes

This hat proved to be waterproof and windproof in cold, rainy weather. I wore it outside while digging up an olive tree to transplant into a house pot. It served me well by keeping my head warm and dry. Today I realized that if I turn it inside out, the curled edge rolls around the edges of my ear lobes and seals out the wind. Who would have thought it would be so functional?

2/1/90
Finished making the hat last night. 123.2 gr of yarn. Felted it today. It required 3 hot 40+ min wash and 1 hot 40 min dryer cycles. It’s the size I want it to be. It’s not as soft and wrinkle free as hat/bag 2020#3.

Next time, I’m using one strand of worsted yarn for a thinner hat with a brim.

1/29/20
I’m working top down from the top of the cap to the lower edge of the hat. Using US 10 or smaller DPNs, CO 6 sts. I want a rounded cap/toque instead of a flat top hat, so I did the following: 1) increased every rnd for rnds 2 thru 8. 2) Then increased every 2nd round for rnds 8 thru 15 until 90sts.

90 felted sts should fit my 21-22” head after shrinking 6% in 3 hot wash and 1 hot dryer cycles. A length of 10.6” should shrink 20% to 8.5” long. Reference project 2020#3; this hat was my felting swatch for LB Fisherman’s Wool.
