Notes

I tried a few configurations using DPNs and circular needles before finding that two circular needles worked the best. I used one on each side from BOR at the heel to the middle of the toe. See pictures.

For me, there are two challenging parts to this pattern:
1) getting the right number of rows for the sole’s toe, foot and heel to equal the desired sole’s length. I’ve used four different bulky yarns; and they all have a larger number of garter rows/in than the pattern’s 7.5 rows/in; but they all have 4sts/in like the pattern’s 4sts/in. Go figure.
2) picking up an equal number of stitches on both sides of the sock.

Also know that the “Upper (worked flat)” portion stacks W&Ts on top of the decreased sts in the preceding “Upper set up rnd:”. At first that threw me off. But after doing it a few times, I got used to it.

1/2/20- Pair#3- Lion’s Pride Woolspun- Peacock
Finished and fit me just right. This pair was a combination of the two smaller sizes.

12/31/19
Woman’s 6-7/8.5” sole on US 9 needles. This pair should turn out larger than the 1986 wool-silk pair, because the yarn is thicker and I’m using US 9 needles instead of US 8s. Garter: 4sts x 8.5rows = 1”

12/30/19- Pair#2- 1986 Bulky Wool-Silk
Started them around 10pm and finished them before 1am. They fit great after washing & blocking them! So the 8.5” sole/women’s 6-7 turns out to be 9 5/8” long from the tip of toe to the tip of heel. And I used up every speck of this yarn. smile

My row gauge is 8 rows/in rather than 7.5. So, I had 10 rows of toe, 34 rows of foot, and 26 rows of heel to make a 8.5” sole. Therefore, I had more picked up side stitches (34 sts) than the pattern (32 sts). After Rnd 2 of the Sides, I had 76 instead of 72 sts; a difference of 4 sts. Left it “as is”, because an extra 4 sts did not effect the rest of the pattern.

This time, I hope to follow the instructions and not changing them. I’m using up an old 1986 wool-silk yarn. Let’s see how far I get with it. I’ll make the smallest size this time. Gauge is 4st/in on US 8.

12/27/19- Pair#1- Brunswick Lockwind
Finished the pair this evening. They are real cute and fit well too. Since they fit Mark better than me, they are now his. Makes sense since he wears a men’s 10.5 shoe and they measure 10.5” long.

12/25/19
Finished one in an evening. Quick knit. Adjusted the BO for it on 12/26. Started with the I-cord BO, but it wasn’t stretchy enough for the front rise. On US 10 needles, I used a standard BO for the sides and the “simple, stretchy bind-off” for the rise.

My yarn is heavier than suggested; therefore, my gauge is different than the pattern’s. Mine is 3.5x5.5 for stockinette and 3.5x8 for garter on US 9 needles. This gauge makes the perfect fabric density that I want so my slipper socks fit and wear well.

So I’m using size 8.5” as my width. My finished sole length is 9” since 8.5” is too short and 9.5” is too long for me. Even though my garter st sole is 9” long, the actual slipper length from tip of the toe to the tip of the heel is 10.5” due to my super bulky weight yarn. I picked up 37 sts on each side of the sole. On Rnd 2 of the “Sides (worked in the rnd)”, picking up 35-36 sts per side or decreasing another set of sts would make a snugger fit for my feet. But since they fit Mark perfectly, I just need to make the 8.5” size for me.

I hope to use up the last of this yarn. These slippers are perfect for it.
