Notes

This is another pattern from the Knitting For Gold Project and will be offered for free in the near future.

Gold is the colour for childhood cancer awareness because our children are worth more than gold. We would do anything for them and when your child is diagnosed with cancer you get to see just how far you will go. We have lost almost everything since Bronwyn’s diagnosis on Jan. 15th, 2012. We have no home, no car, no savings and I have no income. We have not lost family and friends, love and support. This scarf celebrates both what we have lost and not lost. {I will not say “gained”. Cancer doesn’t give. It only takes.}

Lana Hill lost her daughter, Kelsey, to cancer just a month before Bronwyn’s diagnosis so I have never met Kelsey, and that is a shame, but her mother is wonderful. Even in the midst of unimaginable pain, after watching her beautiful daughter suffer for months and die, she continues with grace and determination to help others and raise awareness. This scarf is dedicated to her as she represents what all momcologists are and strive to be.

I call the lace pattern in this scarf The River of Love and Tears. The hearts, stacked on top of each other down the center represent the love we find ourselves surrounded by when we are at our lowest. Running down the edge are tears accumulating in a pool. Many tears are shed in the childhood cancer world for many different reasons…..there is always a reason. We learn to live with it. The jagged edge is all about strength and determination to never, ever give up. A gold cord, pulled through eyelets, is a stylized gold ribbon, the symbol of childhood cancer awareness.

This scarf has an intermediate level of difficulty. Required skills are lace knitting, following multiple charts, provisional cast-on {could be modified} and kitchener stitch although I will be giving an work around this for those who have difficulty with it like me {it’s a lefty thing}.

This scarf is being auctioned off here on our facebook page. We are trying to raise enough money to go home {Thunder Bay} for thanksgiving.
