No fake fur! This is what I did instead:

I used the Ecological wool (a sheepy bulky yarn), for the sides and outside bottom of the cat bed. The wool alpaca blend was used double as a strip for the outside sides and the inside bottom - the stripe there was done as in the pattern.

for both pieces, I cast on using the long tail method. Then when I attached the outside bottom to the edges, I did a whip stitch to join the pieces.

Tip: for batting, cut the batting slightly larger and smush the batting into the shape you need for a full effect!

Update: the kitty absolutely loves the bed - the wool is very attractive to kitties!
