Notes

Several years ago I knit one mitt with the Galway pattern, and felted until the density of the fabric looked good. The finished mitt was only 8” tall, 5” wide at the palm, thumb is 2 3/8” long. My hands are 6 3/4” long x 3 1/4” at the palm. With my fingernails clipped short my fingertips firmly touched the inside top of the mitt, the thumb was too short, the palm too wide, and the mitt is so short that it stops just past the crease of my wrist. I managed to burn my wrist the first time I used that mitt!

For Mary’s mitts I cast on 44 stitches, knit a row, pearled a row, 10R paint, 5R dark pink, 15R paint, joined thumb, knit 30R paint, then decrease to 20 stitches per https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/f439-galway-wors... pattern. Made a left and right hand mitt by offsetting thumbs by 3 stitches. Used Finchley Graft (https://youtu.be/h3sD_RU720c?si=AA1NCfg65MDdioDB) instead of Kitchner Stitch to close the top. Worked GREAT!!! Before felting 16.5” x 7 1/4 “ at palm. After felting 12” x 5 1/4” w, 6.25” between top join of thumb and end of mitts. maybe .75” between my fingertips and the end of the mitts. Making another pair for a friend. I’ll do the exact same thing only knit 27 rows between the thumb and the beginning of the decrease.
