Hat’s finished, now in the midst of the scarf. Had to frog it a few times because I keep forgetting that the “knitting the knit sts and purling the purl sts” only applies to even rows 2, 4, and 6--but not row 8. :)

Update-finished! Washed up really well. Mom loved the hat and scarf. Had enough yarn leftover to make another hat (you’ll soon be able to find it under “slouchy hat”).
