Jan 10, 2019. Wound a long-ish warp, maybe 8 yards. Two different 20/2 silks, tussah and something else, bought years ago from Catnip Yarns.
163 ends, sett 18 epi.
Same sett as I used for the Jitterbug scarf I wove for Erin. Same pattern weft, too. Handspun organic polwarth from Created by Elsie B. Spun longdraw from the fold.
So far so good. This draft is simple and fun to weave.
Jan 23, 2019. Started the second scarf on this warp. I am excited to be using my first handspun from the fleece Kelley gave me for Christmas. It’s merino, soft as a cloud. I scoured it and handcarded. I spun longdraw. It’s a lovely color, but I will learn to dye some of the fiber, because there’s a lot.
I am loving the look of this scarf. I do have to backtrack a lot. I guess my mind must wander because I make so many errors--forgetting to treadle a pick twice when the pattern turns is the most frequent. I’m trying to be more mindful.
Did I mention that I really don’t enjoy hemstitching?
2.9.19. Started weaving the third scarf. I’m using handspun 3/ply polwarth/silk blend from Three Waters Farm. It’s a totally different effect from the other two pattern wefts, and I think I will love it. I spun worsted from combed top and chain plied, so the yarn is firm and shiny. I can hardly wait to get weaving on it. I got out my Jane Stafford instructions for hemstitching, and I am much improved.
2.20.19. All finished, andI’m pretty happy. I love the tan one, which is from the merino fleece I’m learning to process. This was my first attempt at scouting and carding. I’ve learned a lot since then, but this yarn is still nice. Smells a little sheep, though. I’m doing more washing and rinsing since that first go.
Tan merino is spun woolen, long draw, from handcarded Roland. Very soft and light.
Mulberry was spun longdraw from the fold from top purchased on Etsy.
The blue is worsted spun and chain plied because I spun it pretty fine, and two-ply didn’t seem like it would work. It is heavier and not as drapey, but a beautiful luster from the silk/Polwarth blend.
Fun to explore.
The 8 1/2 yard warp was perfect. I had some left, but I didn’t sample and so didn’t need quite as much.
I wove each scarf about 80 inches and all three are about 72 inches after wet-finishing.
Happy with sizes and warp length and looking forward to wearing the merino scarf.
