Inspired by mshanley to knit just the center portion of this shawl in order to make a doily.

June 27, 2021

Was inspired by mshanley ‘s doily sized version of this shawl and decided to do the same.

Washed some Knit-Cro-Sheen given to me by Diana P (neighbor) today as it had some smudges on it. Will be dry in an hour, I suspect. Partial skein, light blue.

May need to do some swatching.

Yarn is dry. I thought I saw a part that was either still dirty or stained, but can’t find it now. Either way, I’m knitting w/it anyway. I figure a little discoloration will make it look antique!

Coiled yarn up. It’s as big as a doily, so I assume I have enough to knit the whole thing. Will be grumpy if I have to do the last rows in another color!

So far so good. Starting row 10. Advise lifeline w the (slippery) cotton. Think it would unravel fast if a st dropped. No harder to work w than any other circular lace cast on so far.

Second day much more trying than the first. That second round on the second page was a doozy. Next time on the first round of the second page move all the stitches at the end of each needle to the next needle before beginning to knit. Also verify stitch count before and after beginning to knit the second round.

Row 26 the stitch indicated with the double S or “section” symbol is difficult - a 5 sts decrease. Do this row alone!

Row 30, I knit 51 sts for the first needle and 50 for each of the following needles, with sts 50 on each (51 on first) being the first st from the next needle. When done, I have 50 sts per needle and I had moved center of round one stitch to the left.

Phew, row 35 took some concentration! I switched to a circular needle on that row which did not help matters. Need a longer circ.

Pattern notes/mods:
-Assumed skp meant ssk and slipped each stitch knitwise
-On rows where the start of the row is moved one direction or the other, slip all the sts to the new correct needle before beginning to knit and be certain the right number of stitches is on each needle before and after knitting the row
-Row 15 has a semi colon, think it can be a mere comma. -Row 26 BEWARE, the “section” symbol or double S is difficult because it’s a 5 stitch decrease and the loops get tight.
-I went off road at row 47 to wrap this up as a doily.
-MY row 47 went (something) like this: OKO (skp K N O K3 0) x 3 skp K N O K2 O K, repeat section in brackets O K O K. (Note, I did some fiddling with the end of each section when I got to the crochet cast off. My goal at THAT stage was to have two crochet loops between the last of the actual pattern diamonds (small or large) and the spine that ends that eighth of the doily).
-MY row 48 went (something) like this: drop O K (drop O A) x 8 O K OK but O N O K at the end of each section. In this round when I say “drop” I mean drop the yarn over from the prior round. This gives enough ease at the edge for nice blocking.
-MY row 49 was the bind off. I put my tiny hook in the spin at the start of round (last stitch in the prior section). I chain stitched 5, I put the next knit stitch (top of a small or large lace diamond) on the hook and chain stitched it. I repeated from around. I had to do a bit of lace surgery to get two chain loops between last diamond and spine of each section during this bind off row. Had I known I’d be fiddling, I might have worked row 47 or 48 differently, but I was NOT going back. Much easier for me to undo a couple stitches a round or two down and fix than to go back. Even so, I ended up with 10 or 11 or 12 loops between points and didn’t even notice when blocking. All this to say that I don’t think it matters exactly how many crochet loops you end up with.

I’m sending a big thank you heaven-ward to MMario for such a lovely design and can’t wait to knit more of his patterns.

Thanks also to mshanley for the idea to make a doily out of this shawl pattern.

I gave the pattern less than full marks because one or two of the abbreviations was not explained in the pattern and most of the stitch explanations were at the beginning of the pattern, but one or two were at the very end.

However, don’t be dissuaded from knitting this. If you’ve knit lace before it’s easy and intuitive. If you have not, grab a buddy for a bit of translation and you’ll be find.

I tried to leave lots of notes here for my next time knitting this and for other knitters to use. smile
