To create the square base before the charts, I cast on with the following:
Long tail cast of of 4. Do not turn.
Work one round of knit as if making i-cord. (4 stitches)
KFB across row, distribute on 4 DPNS, and join in round. (8 stitches)
K1, YO, KFB on each needle. (16 stitches)
Knit the round. (16 stitches)
