SWATCH & MEASUREMENTS
On size 8 metal needles:
-
U: 19 st x 26 rows
-
B: 19.5 st x 24 rows
-
H: 19.5 st x 24 rows
I’m happy with the fabric, so I’m sticking with size 8s. That makes a few new measurements:
- Size 3 (43”) = ~38 (+3 button bands)
- Size 4 (47”) = ~45 (+3 button bands)
11/19/19 My swatch lied, so I’m going to end up with a slightly oversized cardi. It should be fine, as I think it’s designed to be slightly oversized anyway!

Setup & Modifications
- I refuse to do stranded colorwork flat. I casted on for a size 4, and added 5 additional stitches for steeking
- I substituted German Short Rows for W&Ts
- Increased in the stitch below instead of her suggested increase, with the exception of after colorwork. I did M1Ls.
Colorwork Chart A
- I went up a needle size for all colorwork
- Followed the chart, making sure to set up for the steek
- When it came to the first increase, I didn’t want to distort the colorwork, so I knitted a row right after the first chart
Colorwork Chart B
- Followed the chart, making sure to set up for the steek
- When it came to the increase, I didn’t want to distort the colorwork, so I knitted a row right after the second chart
Repeat Colorwork Chart A
- Follow the chart, making sure to set up for the steek
- For the decrease round, I knit 1 round first, then did the decrease
- Knit another round before splitting for sleeves
SEPARATE SLEEVES & BODY
I did nothing special here. I separated as called for, and then knit the remainder of the body and hem as called for - making sure to set up the steek.
When it came time to bind off, I did not like the look of Jeny’s stretchy bind off. I went up 2 needle sizes and did a regular bind off in the rib pattern.
COLLAR
In order to pick up and be able to knit from the correct end of the working yarn, I had to pick up stitches with the tail of the yarn. I picked up one stitch for every CO stitch (a total of 83 stitches). I then knit the ribbing, making sure to set up the steek.
SLEEVES
She recommends picking up 2 extra stitches to help with the gap in the underarms, but I can’t stand how that looks. I only picked up 6 stitches (one for each underarm cast on) and only did 12 decrease rounds (instead of 13).
Knit to one less decrease round, then knit 2x2 for 5 inches.
STEEK REINFORCEMENT
I did a sewn reinforcement. I did 2 stitches per side. Machine settings:
- Straight stitch
- Length 2
- Back stitch the beginning and end!
BUTTON BANDS
I picked up the button bands in tandem to make sure they looked even and that I had the same amount of stitches. I started with picking up two, skipping a row, picking up 2 until I had 104 on each side.
Knitted per her instructions, but inverted the left side band because I picked up both bands from the bottom.
These knitted up quickly.
I did a quick steam block before steeking.
STEEK
The moment of truth… it worked!
